SUCCESS!

We enjoyed the second round of the 2018-2020 Tribattle with Corsham and Trowbridge Camera Clubs in Lacock Village Hall, judged by Sue O'Connell and Peter Brisley, and came away the winners for the second year running.  Lacock came first in 15 out of the 20 rounds.

Below a selection of images from each of the contributors representing Lacock Positive.  Well done everybody!

WE TRAVEL NEAR, WE TRAVEL WIDE

A full programme of reviews and presentations last night! We kicked off by catching up with review of some images from earlier Club Challenges - Christmas Night, Extraordinary Ordinary and Doors.

The first of these saw Christmas lights from a number of surprising locations but it was Derek's images that provoked the most discussion, especially the 'how?'

The challenge following on from Simon Caplan's inspirational talk - to photograph something familiar but yet not - saw many intriguing images, some easier to identify than others, but all participants had a bit of fun.

Lots of us like a good 'door' image on our travels so there was plenty from around the world on show, a few at a different scale than normal!

Next, Danny cherry-picked some of his images from the last 10 years, to show his progress from his initial 'standard' landscape shots to something more creative.

Sue presented her thoughts on Travel Photography and the challenge she set herself when in Puglia, Italy, last year to try and photograph the influences on life in that part of the world.

Philip had gone to London to the British Life Photography 2019 awards ceremony during the week and brought the book containing his three highly commended images to show members.

Finally, Bob very kindly brought his brilliant library of photography books in so that members could borrow them.  How lucky are we!

Next meeting: Viewing members' Tribattle Images

NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE COMMENDATIONS!!!

How proud are we as a club when one of our number enjoys success!  So it is brilliant news that Philip Male has been commended for three of his images in the 2018 British Life Photography Awards.  He will be going to London on February 19 to enjoy the Prizewinners night.

EXTRAORDINARY ORDINARY

Bristol-based speaker, Simon Caplan, gave us a great illustrated talk with a display of his photographic take on small and  interesting features of buildings, street furniture and the like - the Extraordinary Ordinary.

Often graphic and colourful, many of the images invite us to look closer and also make us resolve to look harder at details when next visiting towns, harbours, industry, funfairs etc! Simon showed both digital images on screen and prints.  He also illustrated other subjects in his portfolio, including landscapes and still lifes.  Simon happily shared his technical knowledge and shot location details.  A full evening of interest to all.

Simon encouraged us to try the following -

  • To get out of our comfort zone - try something new
  • Take a second look - use our imagination
  • Walk around the subject.  Try it from different heights and angles
  • Change our lens, change our perspective
  • Try a day with just a prime lens.  The discipline is good
  • Not forget the rules of thirds, it usually works
  • Focus on the focus point.  Where it will be and why
  • Background matters.  Take our with us to improvise

Images from five of our members were recently displayed as a panel at the WCPF Kingswood Salver Interclub Print Panel Competition.  Our panel was well-reviewed but not placed.  Unbeknown to at least one of those members, Sue Power, individual images on panels are also judged.  To her great surprise Sue's image, The Bones of Winter, was placed second in the Vivian Croucher Memorial Plate competition!

IS PHOTOGRAPHY FINE ART?

Last meeting's Speaker was Alan Cowley, Fine Art Photographer, who began the evening with an amusing demonstration and striking images related to his previous working life as an academic cardiologist.  There was a short debate about whether photography was an art and the value that it is given compared with other art forms.  Images from Scotland's North Coast 500 followed, a collection illustrating amazing land, sea, sky combinations in both colour and monochrome, his preferred choice.  Alan emphasised the importance of getting the printing, mounting and hanging right when exhibiting images for display or sale.  Alan's images can be seen at  alancowleyfineart.com/

Images from five members have been chosen to be displayed as a panel at a WCPF event in November under the proposed title Tree-mendous Images!

2018 TRIBATTLE WINNERS!!

Lacock Positive (44 points) beat Corsham and Trowbridge clubs (38 points each) in a friendly battle on a hot Friday night in Corsham Town Hall.  Corsham provided splendid refreshments and a table full of raffle prizes too!

We scored 11 firsts: Phil S, David S, Sue P with 2 each and Philip M, Derek, Ros, Amanda and Ruth with 1 each.  The judge, Peter Crane, rounded off the evening by naming his top six favourite images from the event - David S came top and Phil S came 4th and 6th on his list! (images below)

Lacock Positive will be hosting the event during April 2019.

Results from April 6 and meeting on April 20 2017

Our annual Tribattle with Trowbridge and Lacock Camera Clubs took place on April 6, with Trowbridge taking the crown and Lacock in second place.  Well done to those members who had images selected for the final, especially those below whose images came top in their subject groups:

Competition: Calne Multiclub DPI Battle - results!

A very impressive evening at Calne seeing the 90 images submitted for the Annual Multiclub DPI Battle 2016 staged by Calne Camera Club.  The judge was Matt Revell from Tyndale Photographic Club who gave a sterling performance talking about each and every image shown.  It was a good demonstration about how to give positive feedback with suggestions for improvement of an image.  Some of the images shown were stunning and, as always, there was a little surprise about the image chosen for Overall Winner  - a good reminder that judging is always subjective!

Lacock Positive came 6th out of the 10 clubs from around the area showing images.  The top three clubs were Nonpareil, Calne and Frome and the top individual prize was won by a member of Nonpareil.

The club was represented by images from Philip Male (scores of 20, 20,19) to, David Sage (19,17,15) and Stuart Barnes (17,16,15) - well done to all of you! See images below:

Meeting: Thursday May 26 2016

We are going to be weather dependent for our next meeting!  If it is NOT raining, it will be a bring-your-camera evening and a shoot in Lacock.  If it IS raining, member & wildlife enthusiast Philip Male will be showing some of his many images under the title 'Wildlife & I'.

Our last meeting included Ruth Baldwin giving a presentation about Tim Flach (website: timflach.com), showing some of his animal images, in particular horses and dogs.  Members discussed his use of unusual cropping and Flach's challenging questions about how we treat animals, what animals might make of us and extreme breeding programmes.

Pete Shaw talked about flash photography, taking us through the equipment we need and giving us a basic technical understanding of such aspects as flash sync speed, TTL, master/slave setups and second curtain sync.  As very few members currently use flash, there were a lot of questions and we hope to experiment a little more in the future.

David Sage advised that members might like to enter the Visit Wiltshire competition by submitting images capturing the essence of life in Wiltshire.  Check out:
