MEETING 21.04.22

The timing of Easter 2022 meant our normal fortnightly meeting was delayed by a week and by then we seemed to have a lot to catch up with. So we kicked the evening straight off with a Members presentation by Amanda Gregory and Julia Lloyd-Parks about their trip to Mull and a guided search for otters during a largely wet week in November 2021. Mull did also have other attractions when otters were playing elusive!

Julia then followed this presentation with her own ongoing Mini Project about photographing swans.

As usual, members posted a wide variety of images for the month of March under the One Month, One Image challenge.

The March Shoot took place in the gardens of Lacock Abbey but while there were Spring flowers, the weather was anything but Spring-like. We battled on for a while but we were mostly not achieving what we set out to do.

The title of the challenge 'Manmade' inevitably led to interesting interpretations, trying to remember that subjects had to be made or caused by human beings i.e. artificial rather than natural

MEETINGS 17.02.22, 03.03.22 & 17.03.22

The meeting on 17 February saw members sharing their images for critique and their conversation about the world in general and a jolly time was had by all! In contrast, the following meeting was a studio shoot of harvest mice and still life arrangements from which images will surely be posted in this blog after they have been shared at a future club meeting. Warning: harvest mice are really adorable!

The 17 March meeting kicked off with Ruth Baldwin presenting images from her two photography tours of Morocco, with excellent landscapes from the snow-capped vistas of the Atlas Mountains to the stunning lines of the shifting desert sands. She also had a rare opportunity to see the seasonal migration of nomadic farmers from the lowlands to higher ground and captured graphic lines of camels and their masters. While chances to photograph people were limited, Ruth managed to give a sense of a life very different to our own.

Captures from our own lives in February 2022 were also shown. Some observed the glimpses of forthcoming Spring through nature, others showed architectural glories. Reference was also made to the impact of the big storms in gardens, coast and countryside.

A presentation by David Sage on bracketing gave rise to a discussion on the methods involved plus the benefits or otherwise. This included the use of HDR and focus stacking.

The meeting closed with a review of a Club shoot of Castle Combe over a week of variable February weather.

MEETING 06.01.22

After being Covid-careful over Christmas, the Club decided to revert to Zoom meetings for a while until there are more encouraging signs that social mixing is safe. So the first thing on the Zoom agenda was a journey via images from a shoot last Summer which took four members around (1) the older part of central Bristol with its intriguing mix of beautiful architecture, graffiti and youthful activities; (2) the harbourside with its striking graphic shapes of cranes and plenty of boats; (3) and the newer Millenium Square area, a great space for nighttime fun. Plus Clifton Suspension Bridge for good measure! A small selection is shown below.

The second part of the evening brought us up to December 2021 with a review of members' images taken as the variable weather allowed. Plus a reminder about our good fortune in having clean water in this country.

The meeting closed after a reminder about starting preparation for the Club's annual exhibition (May 1 & 2, 2022)

MEETING 14.10.21

The review of the 'One Month, One Pic' monthly challenge showed that some members had experienced some fantastic light and weather during September, while others had retreated indoors to find their subjects!

The second part of the meeting was given to a critique session, whereby members shared images for comment or perhaps sought advice on how to improve these through field craft or post-processing. A few images discussed are shown below.
