18th January 2024

Our evening started with a talk given by our club secretary, Lesley Cadger on photographing sports, particularly rugby.  Among other things, she listed the different aspects of the game to photograph, namely:

  • Scrums, including the scrum half throwing the ball in
  • Line outs, including the hooker throwing the ball in, and the player being lifted
  • Scoring a try
  • Tackling
  • Passing the ball
  • Kicking the ball
  • Player and referee expressions

Then a discussion of kit needed:

  • A long telephoto zoom lens, up to 400mm if possible
  • 24-105mm (or equivalent) for group photos
  • Warm clothing

The use of tripods was discussed, but as this prevents moving around, it isn't preferred. Finally, camera settings:

  • Manual shooting mode
  • Shutter speed of 1/1000s
  • f/4 to isolate players (blurring the background)
  • f/8 to include more distant players
  • Auto ISO
  • Continuous shooting (try not to fill the camera buffer)

Finally we discussed a club photoshoot date of Saturday 3rd February at Sutton Benger Recreation Ground, Chestnut Road, SN15 4RP.
